Why does AI writing detection matter?

AI is here to stay. According to the Digital Education Council, AI use among students is now almost universal — 88% report using AI in their learning, and 49% say they use AI for refining their written work.

Opinions on AI's place in academic work still vary, but many educators are choosing to embrace it rather than fight it.

Instead of treating AI as an adversary, educators are discovering its potential as a teaching aid — helping students push past creative blocks and brainstorm new ideas. What's more, many educators feel a responsibility to equip students with the AI fluency the modern workforce will expect of them.

Still, helping students learn to use AI responsibly, without losing their critical thinking along the way, remains an ongoing puzzle.

That's where AI writing detection tools come in.

How does AI writing detection work?

When a paper is submitted to Turnitin, sentences from the submission are extracted and segmented into overlapping sections for prediction analysis.

Each segment is classified by the AI detection model and given a value between 0 and 1, denoting the probability of the text being likely human or AI-generated. Each qualifying sentence within these segments inherits the segment’s score.

Since segments overlap, some sentences may have multiple scores, which are then pooled into a single score. These sentence scores are further aggregated and used to compute the overall document AI writing score.

What about false positives?

An AI writing report is meant to start a conversation — not end one. It's a guide, never absolute proof that a student did or didn't use AI.

That's why false positives (instances where fully human-written text is flagged as AI-generated) factor heavily into how we've designed the tool. For documents with over 20% likely AI-generated content, the risk of a false positive is less than 1%.

Below that threshold, we're deliberately cautious: when our model detects AI writing in the 1–19% range, the report shows an asterisk (*%) rather than a score, and no text is highlighted. This reduces the chance that a low-confidence result triggers an unwarranted conversation.

Even so, no detector is foolproof. The AI writing score is at its most useful when weighed alongside other supporting factors — which is exactly what the investigative process below is designed to help with.

How can institutions introduce AI writing detection to students and faculty members?

Introducing a new AI writing detection tool can feel daunting for students and faculty alike.

Students with the best of intentions may wonder why their integrity is under scrutiny. Faculty members, meanwhile, may hesitate to take on new technology — whether due to time constraints, or because the fast-changing landscape of generative AI writing (and why staying alert to potential misconduct matters) hasn't fully been explained to them.

Staying transparent with everyone at your institution about how an AI writing detection tool will be introduced is key to easing confusion and avoiding unnecessary panic.

Communicate the impact of generative AI with both educators and students

Understanding how generative AI is set to reshape education will help your institution get ahead on modernizing its approach — including proof-of-learning methods and safeguarding assignments against misuse.

It also helps students understand generative AI's impact, so they're less likely to stumble into unintentional academic misconduct.

Be transparent about how and when the AI writing detection tool will be used

While the AI writing score is visible only to Turnitin instructors and administrators at this time, this does not discount the importance of openly discussing the usage of AI writing detection with students.

Educators must be open about when and how the AI writing score will be closely monitored. Will it be used during formative assessment, or summative only? Will students be able to see the tool in action ahead of time to understand its capabilities? How will the institution manage potential AI writing misuse cases?

How can institutions use AI writing detection as an investigative tool?

Having an investigative process in place is indispensable, should you encounter a paper potentially written by a generative AI tool, or if potential false positives arise when using an AI writing detection tool. While the risk of false positives is less than 1% for a document with over 20% likely AI-generated content, being prepared to have a direct conversation with a student can make the investigation as pain-free as possible.

Context—such as the writing style and any historical work submitted—is equally important in understanding the full picture. By considering both the AI score and the broader context alongside the academic misconduct policy, educators can view the totality of the data to make an assessment of the student's work.

Rely on educator relationships

An educator's relationship with a student can be one of the most valuable tools when it comes to questions of AI-written text in their work — because educators know their students.

Whatever score an AI detection tool gives, no student should be accused without a real conversation first. Has the educator worked with them throughout the semester? Have they offered feedback along the way? Do they recall the student showing genuine understanding of the material? These relationships, built over a semester of teaching, are worth just as much as any tool when it comes to evaluating a student's work.

Ask students to show critical thinking

When they write, students will often have research notes, outlines, document version histories, or earlier draft print-outs.

They may also have received feedback along the way, whether from you, another educator, a peer, a trusted reviewer, or software that tracks the writing process. Taken together, this kind of evidence can offer real insight into whether a paper reflects human writing or AI writing — and gives students a fair chance to show their work.

Assess previous writing samples

If generative AI isn't allowed for an assignment, it can help to compare the paper against a student's earlier writing — does the style, grammar, and vocabulary feel consistent with what you've seen from them before?

Consider asking students to write a short piece under test conditions at the start of term — and let them know why you're doing it, so it feels transparent rather than suspicious. It's also worth thinking about what guardrails you can put in place to protect future assignments. Not only can this help discourage students from turning to AI when it isn't permitted, it also gives you peace of mind: a genuine writing sample to compare against, should questions of AI writing or ghostwriting come up later on.

Assume positive intent

If you can't reach a clear conclusion on AI versus human writing, assume positive intent. If any uncertainty remains after your investigation — whether that's from the AI detection results or the conversations you've had along the way — we'd recommend moving forward without accusation or penalty.

The good news is that going through this process, even without a firm conclusion, can act as a deterrent — reinforcing expectations around AI use and giving students clarity on where the boundaries are.
